Hesston Public Library is seeking a part-time librarian/library assistant. The position is 24 hours per week with an emphasis on Saturdays.  Hourly pay is $12-$13/hour. Benefits include paid holidays, flexible schedule and sick leave. The library is willing to train the right applicant, but library experience is preferred.  Position open immediately until filled.

Hesston Public Library serves over 2,000 cardholders. Located 40 minutes north of Wichita, Hesston Public Library serves a semi-rural community.  This position will involve nearly all aspects of librarianship, including circulation, ILL, processing, cataloging, reference, basic technology assistance and some programming assistance, and, as always, other duties as assigned. Hesston Public is working to cultivate community relationships, as well as strong after-school patronage.

  • provides reference and information services
  • provides advisory services and bibliographic instruction
  • assists patrons with computer searches
  • serials check in and cataloging
  • performs automated circulation functions, including checkout, check in, renewal of materials and backups
  • registers new patrons
  • receives phone calls 
  • check and respond to patron emails in a timely manner
  • assists patrons with copying and faxing
  • online information searches
  • performs shelving and straightening of library materials;
  • prepares library materials for shelves;
  • enters/deletes cataloging data on computer system;
  • searches sources and orders ILL materials;
  • operate AV equipment and instruct patrons in use
  • arrange décor and books according to program/collection/display themes
  • may also supervise volunteers; 
  • may do book mending and cleaning; 
  • may perform database maintenance
  • may perform technology updates to patron/staff computers
  • may assist with collection development;
  • may arrange décor according to program themes, and arrange exhibits and displays
  • may assist with weeding
  • may assist with historical archiving
  • other associated duties as assigned.

 Basic qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalency of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with computers.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations.
  • Good health – Must be able to reach above head, or kneel to shelve books; must be able to push fully loaded book cart; must be able to lift boxes of books weighing 35 lbs.
